Do you remember, where Jesus told Nicodemus(a rich man), that he must 'be as a child' to enter the Kingdom of heaven? I think, Nicodemus was a good man, too and he really wanted to know, but he didn't have a clue. He replied: 'can a man enter back into his mothers womb?' To that effect, as I remember.
To me, the explanation Jesus gave Nicodemus, reads...'we must nurture the quality of a child, within us, in order to see as a child. A child sees clearly and purely, without prejudice or hubris or guile. A child simply 'believes'. A child may believe in heaven, in Eden...in unicorns, and go straight there!
Now, we may complicate the expression Jesus offered Nicodemus, and bring in logic and reason or 'reincarnation'. They all have there place...especially 'being born again'. But, I believe the explanation was 'more simply put', and meant to offer unto Nicodemus 'child like heart', that truth...that you must think as a child, be as a child...to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
